Hair Prep
Whether it’s your wedding day, a gala, or a party, having your hair properly prepped is super important! Not only does it make my job easier, but it also ensures your style is high quality, long lasting, and looks amazing. Follow these simple tips to help things go smoothly - and I promise it won’t be too painful!
Know your hair type
Every hair type has different needs when it comes to prep, so let’s break it down:
If your hair gets greasy quickly: Wash it the night before or the morning of your event. I can always add product to create texture, so don’t worry about it being too clean.
If your hair is thick, coarse, or frizz-prone: Wash it 1-2 days before your event so it has time to settle and relax. Just remember, the old myth that “dirty hair is best for updos” isn’t true! If you’re unsure, it’s always better to wash it the night before - I can work with freshly washed hair to meet it’s specific needs.
Add the right products
The products you use after washing are key to getting your hair event-ready. Here’s what I recommend based on your hair type:
For fine or thin hair (needing volume): Apply a volumizing mousse to your roots and a little through the ends. Blow-dry your hair upside down for extra lift. Optional: Use Velcro rollers or sleep in a loose French braid to maintain volume.
For thick, coarse, or frizzy hair (wanting smoothness): Use control cream or a thick leave-in conditioner. Blow dry your hair in sections with a paddle brush or round brush for a smoother finish. If your hair is very curly, you may want to lightly straighten it to make styling easier. Optional: A loose brain before bed can help prevent frizz.
For all other hair types: Use a blow dry cream or leave-in conditioner with heat protection. Blow dry your hair upside down for a bit of volume. Optional: A loose french braid can help maintain texture overnight.
Avoid these common mistakes
To make sure your hair is in the best possible shape for styling, here are a few things to avoid.
Dirty or overly oily hair: Clean hair is easier to work with and ensures the style lasts longer.
Too much product: Too many styling products can weigh your hair down and make it harder to style.
Tight ponytails: These can create creases in your hair that are difficult to work around.
Your hair is a big part of your overall look, so prepping it properly will make a huge difference in how everything turns out. Trust me - it’s worth the effort! If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to ask me in advance, and I’ll help guide you so you’re ready for the big day.
